The AASU (Arab Art and Arab Artists in the Soviet Union) Foundation online research project is a virtual collection of digital resources, including archives, documentary films, books and essays, which is available for use by students, scholars and the general public. The project has been conceived with the aim of preserving the history of modern Arab art relating to the period between 1950 and 1991 and connected with the cultural diplomacy between the Arab world and the USSR.
The primary objective of the initiative is threefold: firstly, to amass and disseminate archival materials related to Arab art students in the USSR, exhibitions of Arab art held in the USSR, as well as other archival materials, related to the subject; secondly, to record interviews with former art students and provide access to various documentary films, produced in the 1960−70s on the subject; and thirdly, to publish essays, books, catalogues and organise exhibitions on the subject of Arab art and culture in the USSR.
